Back to my former day job… “How many fingers am I holding up?”

Short but Sweet…

Except for our upcoming cranberry winemaking, our primary 2016 press efforts are now history. Presszilla did her thing, but that’s a long story and this is intended to be a short but sweet story! More importantly, my more lasting impression is the memory of the faithful providing their time, sweat and smiles as we pressed three wines over a two day effort. I want to once again thank all that participated and gave us their all. A forever memory… Presstegious!

It’s not about the work. It’s about the fun!

What’s Happening Now?…

Every stainless secondary fermenter in the winery is now filled to the brim. Malolactic fermentation is ongoing to make our red wines extra special. In three weeks I will perform our first racking to remove fallen sediments. The wine is pumped out of the fermenters, they are cleaned, and the wine is put back in and topped off. I will do this 3-4 times over the next 3 months to gravity filter our wines. Nothing is machine filtered until bottling about a year from now. In my opinion, this is one of the processes we do that leaves more desirable flavor in our wines.

 

Coop Wine Pickup…

For those that have not done so, it’s high time to pick up your 2015-16 coop reserve. I am pleased to report that the vast majority that have done so, have also signed up for 2016-17, and for signing up early, they have taken home our gift of two extra bottles of zinfandel and a First Crush logo corkscrew. I will extend this offer until December 31st.

 

It’s Cranberry Season…

Cranberry bogs surround our winery. They are being harvested as I write this update. I will receive 1500 pounds of dry-picked cranberries in the next week or so. I will announce a date for crush day soon.

The first time we used our grape crushers to crush cranberries we learned that our crushers are indeed grape crushers. If you observe our typical grape crush, the grape stems are stripped from the grapes and discarded out of the back bottom end of the crusher. When we dumped a pail of hard-round stemless cranberries into the crusher, they flew out of the back of the crusher like a Gatling-gun. We had to stop and improvise the end of a plastic pail to keep them in the crusher. In anticipation of this years cranberry crush, I have devised a more-rugged remedy. Necessity is the mother of invention!
