June Update, 2014

Greetings First Crushers,

The First Crush Truck…

The logo and signage of First Crush Winery is now proudly displayed on our, new to us, 1949 Mercury pickup. I reflect that my grandfather was making homemade wine in 1949. It’s hard to imagine that our truck was on the road that long ago, but it was. In 1949 I was a happy boy drinking milk in a stroller. Sometimes I miss my stroller!

Bob at Chatham Sign Company did a fabulous job on the carved signs for the truck. In addition, our COOP member exceptional, John Randall, made a cradle for a new 59 gallon wine barrel that now occupies the bed of the

pickup. He also provided a beautiful brass spicket to finish it off. Diane and I plan to debut our portly mascot at the upcoming Father’s Day Classic Car Show on main street in Hyannis this Sunday. It will be our first big venture away from its protected berth at the winery. I am hoping that our recent pine pollen outbreak stays off my fenders by then. We also hope to see some of our First Crushers at the Father’s Day event. There will be 375 classic vehicles on display this year.

Our Wine Pouch…

We have distributed the first cases of First Crush wine in a pouch to many of our local package stores. Our non-reds, namely our Sauvignon Blanc and our two cranberry products are available in this format. They are perfect for the beach, the boat, four wheeling excursions and in coolers. They are priced at $25.00 for a two-pack at the winery. FYI: When you put a First Crush wine pouch in a cooler, they’re really cool, and so are you!

Non-COOP Wine Events…

We are beginning to get more and more requests to have groups visit the winery for wine tastings, fund-raising events, etc. Last weekend we had 22 ladies come for a bachelorette wine tasting. Look for my red face on Facebook. Keep us in mind if you learn of groups requiring a venue like ours for an event.

Our 2013 Wines…

As mentioned in my last update, our wonderful 2013 Sauvignon Blanc is available. Also mentioned in a past update, we have some remaining cases of our 2012 Sauvignon Blanc in cooler inventory (sorry, only one cooler funny per update). The remaining 2012 is unlabeled and is discounted @ $90.00 per case to COOP members. Our cranberry wines are also ready for summer enjoyment. Our two new 2013 red blends are the same varietal mix as in 2012 and already tasting like mature, fruit-forward, enjoyable wines. We will begin bottling the reds for our COOP members by mid-summer. Whenever I am at the winery, COOP members are welcome to sneak a sip to confirm my opinions. I am very pleased with our 2013 efforts.

Save the Date…

The next First Crush social is August 23rd. It should be our biggest gathering of the year. As mentioned, our Suison County California grower and friend, Ron Lanza will be with us to update the COOP faithful and guests on our next harvest. He will be accompanied by another friend, Frank Musto, our distributor. Frank is responsible for getting Ron’s grapes from vineyard to us so rapidly. Last harvest, the grapes were on the truck in CA on Sunday late afternoon and we had them on Cape Cod at lunchtime Thursday. We had ample lead-time, the COOP was summoned, the equipment was cleaned and in place and our COOP faithful crushed 40,000 pounds of fruit Friday morning. Oh, and we were done by 2:30. To reminisce on our amazing 2013 crush, review the video produced by the Cape Cod Times on our website… firstcrushwoo.wpengine.com

The 2013 COOP…

The 2013 COOP wine reserve ends this summer. This September, at harvest time, the 2014 COOP reserve will begin. Bottom line, there is still time to get on board for 2013 and we will begin taking reserve reservations for 2014 in September. In fairness to the faithful, I am in the process to strategize a concept to reward early COOP reserve enrollment. Stay tuned…

Salutē and Happy Father’s Day to our COOPerative dads,

Frank
